Snow & Cold Weather Advice

Keep warm, keep well

The Department of Health recommends the following practical steps to minimise the risks during cold weather:
  • have regular hot drinks and at least one hot meal a day – if possible, eating regularly helps to keep energy levels up during winter
  • wear several light layers of warm clothes
  • keep as active as possible
  • remember to wrap up warm if you need to go outside on cold days
Yvonne Doyle, Regional Director of Public Health (South East Coast) said: “Remembering the needs of friends, relatives and neighbours who could be at risk is essential. In particular, they need to keep their home at the right temperature - between 18 and 21 degrees Centigrade or 64 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit -, and if they can’t heat all the rooms they use, they should heat the living room during the day and the bedroom just before they go to sleep. The elderly, and those who are ill, are particularly vulnerable during cold weather.”
Keep Warm Keep Well

Weather forecast

The Met Office says that 5-10cm of snow will fall in places on low ground and 15-20cm over hills. The area affected stretches from the Scottish border, through Yorkshire and Humber, the East Midlands, East Anglia, to London and South East England. The snow showers are expected to gradually die out from the north of the area through the day. Some drifting snow is likely in the strong north to northeasterly wind.

Roads

The Highways Agency has advised drivers that snow will affect many routes at times overnight.
The areas most at risk of several inches of drifting snow are in the east, especially from Lincolnshire and the East Midlands, through East Anglia into the south east. However, the north east and trans-Pennine routes will also be affected. Further to the west, such as in Cumbria and the southwest, only a few brief snow showers are likely. All parts will be very cold and windy, so adding some additional clothing, and a hot drink to your luggage is advisable in case of a break-down.
On Friday East Anglia and the south east can expect further snow showers throughout the day. Elsewhere, the day will become largely fine with good visibility, and the strong wind will ease down. Road users are advised to check conditions on the Highways Agency website or the media.

Natalie Clein plays Dvořák

Sun 17 Jan
Venue: Derngate

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

Glinka Ruslan and Lyudmila Overture
Dvořák Cello Concerto
Beethoven Symphony No. 7
Conductor Garry Walker
Cello Natalie Clein

It was during his second visit to America that Dvořák produced his superb Cello Concerto, partly inspired by a performance of a cello concerto by his friend, Victor Herbert. The work also enshrines the memory of Josephina Kaunitzova, a young piano pupil, whose illness and death led Dvořák to recompose the Concerto’s ending – one of his most heartfelt utterances.

Famously described by Richard Wagner as the “Apotheosis of the dance”, Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony takes his fascination with rhythm to almost obsessive heights, from the heart-breaking loveliness of the second movement Allegretto to the unstoppable, dizzying whirl of the finalé. Beethoven himself thought the Seventh one of his best works.

Christmas Comedy Review

Alternative festive fun with Christmas comedy was billed for the Royal stage,  at Royal & Derngate venue over the last few days, Tuesday , Wednesday , and Thursday.

Well alternative it was , with a compare, Carl Donnelly in between acts, very funny warm up man he was.

There were gaps in the seats , he called them "laughter gaps", he then asked the audience to move forward and fill the empty gaps in the seating, this was very cosy , as i sat in the very front row.

The first act was Rob Deering , a multi- talented comedian he was, by playing with props, like a guitar, and asking for people to shout out rock numbers, and he played them with remarkable skill, and very funny too, as he changed the lyrics to the songs !

Rob Deering

Rob Deering first made his mark on TV when he joined the intrepid cast of 99 Things To Do Before You Die (on Five) and has since turned up consistently on TV and at comedy clubs around Britain, lambasting pop culture, promoting apple-based alcoholic beverages and playing widdly-widdly rock guitar, all with his inimitable cheesy egotism.

Mike Wilmot

There was an interval , and we all returned and was introduced to  Canadian comic Mike Wilmot, who jokes about beer and sex mainly , Mike was politically and anatomically incorrect , his humour is not for under 18's , as it was a no holds barred performance , but very funny show.
