Royal & Derngate Northampton w/c 16 November

Back to the future with 1984

60 years after 1984’s publication, a brand new production of the futuristic novel will be premiered at Royal & Derngate from Tuesday 17 to Saturday 21 November, with physical theatre, puppetry and music combined to create a cutting-edge and thought-provoking piece of theatre.

With its predictions of globalisation, surveillance paranoia and control through language, George Orwell’s classic futuristic tale is acutely relevant for our time. Blind Summit Theatre and BAC bring this visionary dystopian novel to the stage in a new low-tech adaptation.

Drawing on agit-prop techniques, the company returns to a simple form of theatre-making free from modern digital technology, using just cardboard props, live actors and puppetry. The ensemble manipulates objects, people, puppets and the set to tell the story of Winston and Julia’s dissident love affair in a futuristic totalitarian state.

The sensational Blind Summit Theatre is now established as a world leader in high quality puppetry for adult audiences, and over recent years has gained major international profile through their revolutionary work on Anthony Minghella’s Olivier Award-winning Madama Butterfly for English National Opera and their exquisite puppetry in His Dark Materials for Birmingham Rep.

This startling new physical production will bring to life the Orwellian masterpiece that created the all-seeing Big Brother, a concept that has become so familiar to us all. 1984 takes to the Royal stage from Tuesday 17 to Saturday 21 November with evening performances at 7.45pm and matinees at 2.30pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Tickets, priced from £25.50 to £9.50, can be booked by calling the Box Office on 01604 624811 or online at www.royalandderngate.co.uk

Enjoy the feelgood factor with top comic

The star of this year’s Edinburgh Fringe, Stephen K Amos is back on the road for his third, solo UK tour with his new critically acclaimed show The Feelgood Factor, which comes to Royal & Derngate on Monday 16 November.

Steven K Amos

Stephen has charmed and entertained audiences all over the world with his easy, relaxed style, intelligent wit and honest, warm-hearted joie de vivre. Bursting with more fun, warmth, bonhomie and love than ever before, The Feelgood Factor is designed to lift our spirits and look for the positive – just what we need in these gloomy times.

The previous 12 months have been a phenomenal success for Stephen. His hit show Find The Funny played to sell out audiences on the UK tour and to an audience of 30,000 in Australia. Excitingly, Stephen has recorded his own comedy show for the BBC and a Simon Nye penned BBC sitcom. In the last couple of years Stephen has made a name for himself - appearing on Have I Got News For You (BBC1), made his mark with a hilarious set at The Royal Variety Performance (ITV) and triumphed on Live At The Apollo (BBC1).

Only last week on Channel 5 TV, Steven was guest panellist with Matthew Wright  for the whole week,on the "Wright Stuff", reading the news papers and giving his view on things, then busy Steven has been on the highways to each venue up and down the British Isle.

A talented actor, Amos has proved not only a gift for comedy but also for more serious roles. He was Sir Benjamin Backbite in Sheridan’s farce The School For Scandal at this year’s Edinburgh Festival – alongside Lionel Blair, Marcus Brigstocke and Phil Nichol and he appeared in the West End and Edinburgh run of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, alongside Christian Slater.

Stephen will be supported by rapidly rising star Seann Walsh, winner Chortle Best Newcomer Award 2009 and one of the most exciting new acts on the comedy circuit, admired for his assured delivery and self-deprecating silliness.

Stephen K Amos takes to the Derngate stage with The Feelgood Factor on Monday 16 November at 7.30pm. Tickets – priced £16.50 – can be booked by calling the Box Office on 01604 624811 or online at www.royalandderngate.co.uk

Half toff, half pikey...all comic!

Irish comic and star of TV's Mock the Week Ed Byrne takes to the Derngate stage for a night of blistering comedy with his new show Different Class on Wednesday 18 November.

Ed Byrne

Different Class examines Ed’s inability to fit in, whether it be with the youth of today, the old, the middle class or the working class. Steadily turning into a grumpy middle-aged man Ed touches on all things that exasperate him including his recent marriage, class and all its divisions, the young and their ways and anything else that strikes him as humorous.

Ed has been busy over recent years. He has toured the UK with his sell out show Standing Up and Falling Down and has taken the show around Australia and New Zealand as well. He has been a consistently regular panelist on BBC 2’s Mock the Week and has recently been seen again on Have I Got News for You and the Graham Norton Show. Ed has a Radio 2 sitcom in the pipeline due for broadcast in the autumn and is also writing a book about climbing the Scottish Munroes.

Ed is famed for his quick-fire wit and acute insight into a world that's clearly mad from his sane vantage point, with his observational stand up instinctively sensing the ridiculous in everything.

Fresh from success at the Edinburgh Fringe, Ed Byrne brings his latest show Different Class to Royal & Derngate on Wednesday 18 November at 7.30pm. Tickets – priced £18.50 – are going fast. Book now to avoid disappointment. Call the Box Office on 01604 624811 or visit www.royalandderngate.co.uk.
