The Simon Cowell-curated charity single
‘Everybody Hurts,’ goes on sale as a download on Sunday.

Nobody knew Cowell was a R.E.M. fan, but he’s done a nice job of pulling together an absurd amount of star power to help victims of the earthquake in Haiti. The “Idol” judge called mostly on fellow Brits, who make the whole affair much more chill than “We Are the World” by respecting the tender nature of the 1993 R.E.M. hit. Not so Jon Bon Jovi, who really sticks out as he groans and strains Bruce Springsteen-style.
But Leona Lewis coos dreamily. Rod Stewart goes mellow and almost sounds like Michael Stipe for a moment.

Cowell said
" Making the record had been an absolute priority for us all .
Half of the single's proceeds will go to the Sun's Helping Haiti fund and the rest will be donated to the Disasters Emergency Committee".
The moving 1992 song by REM was chosen because of its emotional impact, and the band have agreed to give all proceeds to Haiti.

Singer Michael Stipe said:

"How could we not say yes to this appeal? We're honoured to play even a small role in trying to help."

"The message is very simple, and very human, and that simplicity resonates with people.

"It points towards our fragility and our strength, be it physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual."
