Christmas waste and recycling 2012 arrangements for Northampton

Households across Northampton are being encouraged to look out for important information on Christmas and New Year waste and recycling collections.
A recycling guide containing the 2013 collection calendar will be landing on doormats of homes over the next couple of weeks and extra information on Christmas collection arrangements will be attached to bins.
From 24 December to 6 January, black wheelie bins will continue to be collected fortnightly and recycling boxes weekly. Black sacks will also be collected weekly.  Collections will continue to take place on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.  There will be no collection on Christmas Day (Tuesday) and instead this collection will take place on Sunday, 30 December. Households affected will be reminded with a sticker on their bin.
Brown bin collections will as usual be suspended over the Christmas period.  Instead of brown bin collections, crews will focus on collecting extra recycling. Households are being encouraged to put out all of their extra paper, cardboard, plastics and cans that pile up over the Christmas period.  Anything that does not fit in the recycling boxes can be placed alongside the boxes in clear plastic bags or carrier bags, but not black sacks as they can be mistaken for general refuse.  Large cardboard will also be collected if stacked next to recycling boxes from 24 December until 6 January.
For health and safety reasons all glass must be contained within the recycling box.  Any excess bottles and jars can be taken to the nearest recycling banks. Food waste must also be contained within the brown food waste bin with the lockable lid.

When brown bin collections resume from 7 January onwards, residents will be able to leave out their real Christmas trees for collection alongside their brown bins. Households who do not have brown wheelie bin collections can take their Christmas trees to their local waste recycling centre.
Councillor John Caswell, Northampton Borough Council cabinet member for the environment, said:
“Residents in Northampton have been doing a fantastic job at recycling even more of their household waste this year.  There’s always lots of extra recycling that mounts up around Christmas and it would be great to see this being recycled too.”
