Thousands of people flocked to
on Saturday night to experience a sensational outdoor show. Crackers? – presented by Royal & Derngate and The World Famous – lit up the skies of Northampton in a huge spectacle combining fireworks, music, projection and performance. 10,000 people experienced this free event from within the central performance area, while 15,000 more watched from around the periphery of the circle of fireworks. Crackers? is a celebration of the explosive and dangerous beauty of fire and fireworks and an exploration of our attitudes to risk. Having wowed audiences in
's Olympic Park in 2007 and at Singapore Arts Festival earlier this year, this was an exclusive opportunity for the people in Northamptonshire and beyond to take part in a life-enhancing experience. Sydney
The audience was surrounded by fire and smoke, with a symphony of music and pyrotechnic sounds filling the air. Thirty local volunteers had the chance of a lifetime to perform in the show, interacting with the crowds as they arrived and appearing as the delicately beautiful human sparklers during the performance. After an interplay of projection and ever larger pyrotechnics, the event moved to a fantastic finale of giant Catherine wheels and fireworks arcing over the whole site in a kaleidoscope of colour.
Audience reactions were incredible and feedback includes comments such as: “Thank you for a spectacular evening - it was awesome and a pleasure to be part of the crowd,” and “absolutely stunning”. Royal & Derngate’s Chief Executive Martin Sutherland said: “All involved with the organisation of this event are proud to have been able to present a show of such a scale and quality. The feedback has been extremely positive, and we’re delighted that so many people were able to be part of this breathtaking experience.”
