Update on support for those affected by flooding in Northampton

Northampton Borough Council and other agencies have now spoken to everyone evacuated from holiday homes at Billing Aquadrome to Lings as a result of flooding.

Specialist staff from the Borough Council have been talking to all those who have been at Lings to check what individual support they need until they are able to return to their holiday home.

With arrangements in place, the rest centre at Lings will be closing later today (Friday).

Holiday home owners have been advised that Billing Aquadrome and Cogenhoe Mill will remain closed at least until Monday 26 November.

The Borough Council will be providing housing support for people who have particular needs, while others have made their own arrangements. Evacuated holiday home owners who are in need of emergency housing assistance or information has been advised to call the Borough Council’s homelessness helpline,  01604 629804.

The Environment Agency, Northamptonshire Police, Northamptonshire County Council and Northampton Borough Council, Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue, the NHS and Billing Aquadrome management are continuing to work in partnership to ensure that people remain safe and can return to their holiday homes as soon as that is possible.

Councillor David Mackintosh, Leader of Northampton Borough Council said:

 “In an emergency situation our priority is to make sure everyone is safe and looked after. Opening up Lings as a rest centre gave holiday home owners somewhere to go and a place to sleep while they made longer-term arrangements.

“Obviously a rest centre is not suitable for people to stay in any longer than necessary. So for those who need it we are providing assistance through housing support services, and in extreme cases we can look at homelessness support. However, many holiday home owners will be able to make their own arrangements, and we will continue to keep them updated on what is happening.

“If anyone finds that they need assistance and have nowhere to turn, they can call the Borough Council’s homelessness helpline, 01604 629804 at any time of day or night.”

Billing Aquadrome evacuation & Changes to opening times and fitness sessions at Lings Forum, including flood advice!

Billing Aquadrome has been evacuated by the Environment Agency (EA) this morning (November 22) because of a risk of flooding.

The Borough Council is supporting the EA and the other agencies involved in the evacuation and our Housing Team is working at the rest and evacuation centres to deal with vulnerable people who need assistance.

Overnight, Lings Forum will once again be used as a rest centre for people evacuated from Billing. Overnight, Lings Forum will once again be used as a rest centre for people evacuated from Billing. This will mean that the main hall and squash courts will be closed to the public from 4pm today. They are likely to remain closed tomorrow.  The gym, swimming pool and Forum Cinema will remain open and fitness classes are running as usual.

All the facilities including the main hall and squash courts have re-opened and classes are running as normal.
