Interactive festive fun for children aged six and under
Inspired by the Dickensian world of A Christmas Carol, which can be seen in its
Royal auditorium this festive season, Royal & Derngate presents a playful,
interactive adventure called Humbug!, ideal for children aged six and under to
enjoy with their family or school. Taking over the theatre's Underground
performance space for the Christmas period, Humbug! runs from
Tuesday 11 December to Sunday 13 January.
Christmas is a time for magic and mischief, and this year Noelle,
the impish spirit of Christmas, has come to Royal & Derngate to help
adventurous young audiences and their families journey through time,
walk through walls, become invisible or even fly!
Noelle will whisk audiences back to a Victorian Christmas in the toyshop
of Mr Humbug and his timid toymaker Nick Trimble. When the two men go
home for the holiday, Mr Humbug sits in front of his empty Christmas tree,
while Nick Trimble, who has made a mountain of decorations, cannot imagine
where on earth he can hang them all...
An enchanting installation designed by Ellie Davis includes a time travelling tunnel,
a Victorian toy shop for children to explore, and a real Christmas tree for them to decorate.
The audience will also have the chance to become Christmas spirits in a multi-sensory journey through the clouds.
Following the success of Down The Rabbit Hole and Through The Wardrobe,
Royal & Derngate’s previous Christmas events for very young children, this wonderful interactive adventure with a talented cast of three actors is directed by
the theatre's Associate Director Dani Parr, the creator of many shows for
early years audiences including Flathampton and The Dream Space.
Humbug! can be seen from Tuesday 11 December to Sunday 13 January.
Tickets for family performances (weekends and holiday time) are just £7.50 each.
Performances on school days can be booked by groups of up to 50, at a cost of £255
for the group.

Announcing two further actors for this years pantomime Aladdin at R&D Northampton
Brian Fortuna makes his panto debut at Royal & Derngate!
The multi-talented dancer, choreographer and performer Brian Fortuna will make his pantomime debut this Christmas in Royal & Derngate’s spectacular pantomime, Aladdin, which runs from 9 December to 8 January.

Brian, who will play the title role of Aladdin in Northampton, is best known for his astonishingly skilled performances on two series of Strictly Come Dancing. He has recently finished filming a romantic short film entitled Love + 1.
Brian was principal dancer in the West End production of Burn The Floor at the Shaftesbury Theatre earning him a What’s On Stage Award nomination as Best Newcomer. He was also lead choreographer and consulting producer on the groundbreaking new show Dancing on Wheels, pairing disabled and able-bodied contestants as they learnt the art of Ballroom and Latin DanceSport for BBC3. His television success has enabled him to dance as principal dancer in the two national US tours of Dancing With The Stars, as well as appearing in The Aviator with Leonardo Di Caprio.
Joining Brian on stage will be the veteran performer Jeffrey Holland in the role of Widow Twankey. Jeffrey is no stranger to pantomimes having appeared in them since 1968 making Aladdin his 40th season. As well as his numerous appearances on stage in the West End and throughout the UK, Jeffrey is well known for his television roles including the classic hit programmes Are You Being Served?, Hi de Hi, You Rang M’Lord and Oh Dr Beeching.
Brian Fortuna and Jeffrey Holland join comedian Bobby Davro and television icon Basil Brush who the theatre announced in the roles of Wishee Washee and Chief Inspector Basil a few weeks ago.
“This production is packed with all of the traditional Royal & Derngate pantomime ingredients including an abundance of comedy, stunning sets and beautiful costumes,” says Jonathan Kiley, Executive Producer of Aladdin. “The combination of our superb cast and the Royal & Derngate’s hallmark of outstanding value-for-money and unmissable entertainment for all ages make Aladdin the must-see pantomime in Northamptonshire this Christmas,” Jonathan added.

Exciting Summer Schools at Royal & Derngate
This summer holiday Royal & Derngate’s Creative Projects team have devised two first-rate week-long Summer Schools jammed packed with fast-paced fun for young people of all ages.
Designed specifically for ages 14 and above, Parkour Summer School – The Art Of Moving focuses on the exciting and physically challenging world of free-running. From the opening scenes of James Bond to the characters of Channel 4’s Misfits, free-running has become a spectacular physical artform. With a team of movement specialists, film makers and music producers the workshop will develop the skills of Parkour and participants will be given the opportunity to capture their moves on film, edit and create a short movie clip and customise a musical soundtrack.
Parkour Summer School is a weeklong workshop from Monday 25 to Friday 29 July. Places are priced at £125 per participant and can be booked by calling Box Office on 01604 624811.
Following on from the success of last year’s summer workshop, the new and improved Musical Mash-Up returns. Working with theatre professionals the participants will combine some of the best theatre songs with contemporary pop to create a final day performance like no other in this all-singing, all-dancing summer school.
Designed for ages 8-14 this mind-blowing musical fun is suitable for both beginners and experienced performers. Musical Mash-Up: Remixed begins Monday 1 and runs until Friday 5 August. Places are priced at £125 per participant and can be booked by calling Box Office on 01604 624811.

The last time is saw a play by playwright DC Moore was at the Mail coach public house, and that was a one man play, which was part of Royal & Derngate's 'Addicted To You' season.
Audience were seated on the stage of the Royal auditorium and the actors performed around the audience.

Town is a contemporary play, and is inspired by the life of local poet John Clare, which has a modern family of dad, mum, and Son John. John tried and failed the high life in London, he met other people on his journey, John then becomes broke and fed up with what life has given him, he then has to walk penniless back to Northampton, across fields and shopping centres, shoplifting for food.

This play has references to Northampton Town, and audience were treated to the nightlife of the town , and was an hilarious account of John's troubles, as many can relate to him. John on Job seekers allowance, still able to go out on a weekend night in Northampton's town centre, after borrowing some money from dad.

Slipping back into his old habits, old jobs and old relationships, John considers the reasons why his urge to come back took him on a sixty mile walk North, from the anonymity of corporate city life, to the comfort of home.
Following his critically acclaimed Honest for Royal & Derngate, Northampton writer DC Moore’s Town poignantly explores enduring themes of identity, isolation and belonging, rooting them in modern life. With heartbreaking honesty and humour, it explores the feelings that we all have about our hometown, and follows one man on his road to get back to where he started.

From the outset this reggae musical is lively. I found members of the cast in the audience directing patrons to their seat, i was one of them. Wow the show hasn't even started and things were happening, or had it already started?
I found the whole show very exiting from the very beginning to the end.There was so much happening on the stage,from the musicians to the actors. Enjoyed the songs, the dancing, the musicians, the acting was excellent.
The story of Ivanhoe Martin, dubbed
'Captain Midnight' and 'The Two Gun Killer'
'The Harder They Come' is inspired by the real life story of Ivanhoe Martin , a legendary Jamaican outlaw of the 1940's. Born Vincent Martin , he was a criminal from the age of 14, when he was convicted of wounding and sentenced to 12 lashes. Prison sentences followed, he was dubbed 'Captain Midnight' and 'The Two Gun Killer', A very snappy dresser and a cool talker, quite a charmer in fact.
Ivanhoe Martin comes to the city to make it big singing Reggae. However, he finds life in the city to be harder than he thought.

Patrons may have seen the movie, as many of my colleagues on Inspiration FM have many times. In the movie Ivan was played by reggae star Jimmy Cliff , that was 32 years ago now back in 1972, was it really that long ago!.
My point is, the plot of this musical is well known, and well loved by generations of people from all walks of life.
This musical had a 15 minute ganja break , or interval to the Innocent ones, and the radio DJ in this musical reminds me of someone, ha ha !

We Are Pathmakers has been performed as part of the Maps and Dreams season
of performance storytelling
at The Barbican. It has also been shown closer to home as part of the Shoe Town Festival at the
Town, My Town is a guided walk that encourages the audience to see Northampton
as they’ve never seen it before: to be a tourist in your own town.
Beyond the surface of the familiar
and the worn-out pathways, Jo Blake brings to life the forgotten fragments;
the half-remembered tales
and histories of characters and events that are the fabric of the town.
This guided walk is sure to be
a popular event, and will set off 11am and 3pm on Saturday 26 and
Sunday 27 June, and at the
same times the following weekend, Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 July.
Taking place on Saturday 10 July at 8pm, On Common Ground is an evening of story, music,
poetry and song in which Chris Wood, Hugh Lupton and Big Sky put their ears to the ground
and tell the story of John Clare. Hugh is a master wordsmith, Chris is a leading folk musician
of his generation, and together they weave a beguiling magic, along with Norwich
community choir Big Sky.
