Take a trip to the End of the Rainbow

Following on from the huge success of the theatre’s Ayckbourn at 70 and Young America seasons, Royal & Derngate starts its Spring 2010 Addicted to You season with Peter Quilter’s fascinating play with music, about the legendary Judy Garland. End of the Rainbow takes to the Royal stage from Friday 5 to Saturday 20 February, with its compelling look at this remarkable star and the price she paid for celebrity.

Tracie Bennett as Judy

End of the Rainbow is a savagely funny musical drama, documenting Judy Garland’s 1968 comeback tour. In her London hotel room, with her new young fiancé at her side, we see Garland battling with a tornado of drugs and alcohol as she undertakes an exhausting series of concerts in a bid to reclaim her crown as the greatest talent of her generation. Despite a series of failed marriages and a wrecked Hollywood career, she remains a tough and remarkable woman, always armed to the teeth with her legendary razor-sharp wit.

Brilliantly weaving the humour and heartbreak of the final months of Garland’s life with her most memorable songs, including Get Happy, Come Rain or Come Shine, The Trolley Song and Somewhere Over the Rainbow, the production stars Olivier Award-winner Tracie Bennett as Judy. Having starred recently in top musicals La Cage aux Folles and Hairspray, Tracie is also well-known from her time as Sharon Gaskell in Coronation Street. The show is directed by acclaimed West End and Broadway director Terry Johnson, whose recent productions include The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Rain Man and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Giving an intriguing insight into this most iconic of stars, End of the Rainbow will move audiences to tears and laughter. The production opens at Northampton's Royal & Derngate from Friday 5 to Saturday 20 February, prior to an expected West End transfer. Tickets are priced from £27 to £11 and can be booked by calling the Box Office on 01604 624811 Or book online here
